Mobile Device Forensics in India — What Data Can Be Recovered From Your Phone?

Your smartphone knows more about you than almost anyone. It records your conversations, your location at every hour of every day, your financial transactions, your search history, your app usage, and your private messages — even after you think you have deleted them. For digital forensic investigators, this wealth of data makes mobile devices the single most important source of evidence in the majority of digital cases handled in India today.

What is Mobile Device Forensics?

Mobile device forensics is the science of extracting, preserving, and analysing data from smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices in a forensically sound manner — ensuring the evidence collected is court-admissible and has not been altered during the examination process.

At Securium Forensic Lab, mobile device forensics is performed using industry-leading tools including Cellebrite UFED, Oxygen Forensic Detective, and Magnet AXIOM — the same tools used by law enforcement agencies globally. Every extraction is hash-verified, and every examination is documented to meet Indian court evidentiary standards.

What Data Can Be Recovered from a Mobile Phone?

The answer often surprises clients — the amount of data that survives deletion is significant. Here is what our examiners can typically recover:

Messages & Communications

  • WhatsApp messages, voice notes, and media files — including deleted conversations
  • Telegram, Signal, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger messages
  • SMS and MMS messages — including those permanently deleted from the inbox
  • Email data from Gmail, Outlook, and other mail applications

Call Records & Contacts

  • Full call log history including missed, received, and dialled calls with timestamps
  • Deleted contact records and SIM card data
  • VoIP call records from WhatsApp, Skype, Google Meet, and similar applications

Location & Movement Data

  • GPS location history showing where the device has been and when
  • Cell tower connection records mapping the device’s approximate location
  • Wi-Fi network connection history — including networks connected to and when
  • Google Maps and Apple Maps search history and route data

Media & Files

  • Deleted photos and videos from the device gallery
  • Screenshots, voice recordings, and downloaded documents
  • Application-specific media stored within messaging and social media apps

 Application Data

  • Banking and payment app transaction histories (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM)
  • Social media account activity and login records
  • Browser history, bookmarks, and cached web data
  • App installation and usage timeline

How Does Mobile Forensic Extraction Work?

Mobile forensic extraction is performed at different levels depending on the device condition and the type of evidence required:

  • Standard extraction of active data using the device’s own operating system. Fastest method — suitable for most cases.
  • Deeper extraction accessing the complete file system, including hidden and system files not visible to the user.
  • Bit-for-bit copy of the entire device memory — the gold standard of mobile forensics. Allows recovery of deleted data through file carving.
  • Hardware-level extraction for damaged, locked, or encrypted devices where software methods cannot access the data.

Can Deleted Data Be Recovered from a Mobile Phone?

Yes — in many cases. When data is deleted from a smartphone, the operating system marks the storage space as available but does not immediately overwrite the data. Using physical extraction and file carving techniques, our examiners can often recover messages, photos, and records that the device owner believed were permanently deleted.

The success rate depends on factors including: how long ago the data was deleted, how heavily the device has been used since deletion, whether the device storage is encrypted, and whether a factory reset has been performed. We assess each device individually and provide an honest opinion on recovery pro

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover WhatsApp messages that have been deleted?

In many cases, yes. WhatsApp stores message data in a database file on the device that persists after messages are deleted from the app interface. Using physical extraction techniques, we can often recover this deleted database content. The success rate depends on whether the device storage has been overwritten since deletion. Contact us with details of your specific situation for an assessment.

Can you examine a phone that is locked or has a broken screen?

Yes. A locked PIN or broken screen does not prevent forensic extraction in most cases. We have access to advanced extraction tools and — for devices that cannot be accessed through software — JTAG and chip-off hardware extraction techniques. We assess each device individually and advise on the most appropriate extraction method.

Do I need a court order to submit a phone for forensic examination?

If the phone belongs to you or your organisation, no court order is required — you can submit it directly to our lab as the owner. If you need us to extract data from a device you do not own, or from a cloud account that is not yours, a court order or legal process is required. We are happy to advise on the correct legal approach for your situation.
